Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich With Homemade Onion Rings Recipe

Chicken Fried Steak is a southern delicacy brought over from Austria and Germany. It is prepared much like chicken, with cube steak. It is a beautifully battered and fried piece of luscious steak. Chicken Fried Steak, Country Fried Steak, or Pan Fried Steak whatever you call it, pair it with some creamy gravy and mashed potatoes, and you have a delicious southern, stick to your ribs meal. If by chance you have any leftovers, save them for lunch the next day. Pair them up with some really great onion rings, and enjoy a tasty southern meal. Fresh or leftover, nothing beats a Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich and Homemade Onion Rings.

Here is what you will need for the Chicken Fried Steak and Homemade Vidalia Onion Rings:

  • Chicken Fried Steak, leftover, or freshly prepared. See tip below for reheating leftovers.
  • Vidalia onion
  • Buttermilk
  • Panko bread crumbs
  • Regular bread crumbs
  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Kaiser rolls
  • Condiments:

Mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, pickles, tomatoes, red onions and lettuce, or even a nice slice of cheese

Specific amounts depend on how many onion rings you will be cooking. While Vidalia onions are great for rings, a good yellow onion are just as good fried up and paired with a sandwich.

How to Make the Onion Rings

1) Peel and slice the onion into 1/8 to 1/4” slices. Separate the slices into rings. Place the rings in a bowl, cover with buttermilk. Allow to soak in the fridge for at least 24 hours. The buttermilk gives the onion an even sweeter taste when they are fried. Drain the buttermilk from the onions. Reserve the excess buttermilk for rings.

2) Prepare to dredge. Place equal parts of panko bread crumbs and regular bread crumbs in a shallow dish. In another shallow dish, mix salt and pepper with the flour. Cracker crumbs or corn meal can be used as well. Experiment with some herbs and seasoning with the crackers and flour for added layers of flavor.

3) Now take the rings, dip them into the buttermilk, coating completely. Next, coat the rings completely with the flour, and then back to the buttermilk bath. Finally, put them into the bread crumb mixture, coat thoroughly and liberally.

4) Once the onion rings are all coated and dredged, they should fry in 350 degree oil for three minutes. Place them in the hot oil a few at a time, being sure to not over fill the fryer. There must be room for the oil to fry the entire ring, for even doneness. Turn the rings over half way through cooking to be sure the entire ring is cooked. When they float and are the perfect golden brown, they are done.

5) Brush the Kaiser roll with butter and grill a bit to toast. Place the chicken fried steak on the freshly toasted roll. Pile on your favorite condiments like, mayo, mustard, ketchup, pickles, tomatoes, red onions and lettuce, or even a nice slice of cheese, whatever you like on your Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich. Serve with golden brown onion rings and some catsup for dipping.

If you are using left over Chicken Fried Steak it should be reheated before putting in a sandwich. Never reheat pan fried foods in the microwave! This will only make the crust soggy, and the meat rubbery. To reheat left over Chicken Fried Steak, the right way, loosely wrap them in tin foil in a single layer, put them on a baking sheet or pan. Place them in a pre heated 350 degree oven for 15-20 minutes. Or, place them in the hot onion ring oil for just a minute or two. Be careful not to overcook, you just want to heat them back up. They will look and taste as though you just made them. These are the best way to reheat without losing the crispiness of the coating or turning the meat tough and rubbery.
